Andy Burnham has promised to publicly disagree with Donald Trump if necessary, emphasizing the need to defend Britain’s national interest. In his first major broadcast interview since becoming prime minister, Burnham made clear he will not shy away from voicing differences with the U.S. president, particularly over policies like the ongoing strikes on Iran. This stance marks a potential shift in UK-US relations under the new Labour government.
Burnham’s Approach to US Relations
During an interview on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Burnham stated: “I can’t at any point say that I won’t take a different opinion from him [Trump], that I will need to voice a different idea that is right for Britain.” He added that a prime minister must prioritize the national interest and is willing to express disagreements in public if required. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting echoed this sentiment, telling Sky News that the Trump administration values straightforward allies who do not “suck up.”

Key Policy Divergence: Iran
The most immediate area of tension is Iran. While the U.S. has resumed offensive military operations, Burnham has adhered to the policy established under predecessor Keir Starmer of not supporting such actions. Streeting confirmed he told U.S. counterpart Pete Hegseth that Britain “will not support offensive action in Iran,” though both nations continue to cooperate on other matters.
Comparison of UK and US Positions on Iran
| Issue | UK Position (Burnham Government) | US Position (Trump Administration) |
|---|---|---|
| Support for offensive military operations in Iran | No support; continued diplomatic opposition | Active airstrikes and offensive operations |
| Public disagreement with ally | Willing to voice differences openly | Expects loyalty but respects straight talk |
| Overall relationship tone | Cooperative but candid | Transactional, values strength |
Why This Matters for UK Foreign Policy
Burnham’s approach signals a more independent line from Washington than seen under some predecessors. Analysts suggest this could strengthen the UK’s standing among European allies while potentially straining ties with the White House. However, Streeting’s comments indicate that Trump may prefer open dialogue over sycophancy.
Key Takeaways
- Andy Burnham is ready to publicly disagree with Donald Trump on critical issues.
- The UK will not support U.S. offensive operations in Iran, maintaining Starmer-era policy.
- British officials believe the Trump administration respects straightforward, confident allies.
- This stance could redefine the “special relationship” between the two nations.
