Andy Burnham's long game has proven to be a masterclass in political strategy, outmaneuvering short-term thinkers like Keir Starmer. While Labour struggled after the 2024 local elections, Burnham's allies quietly engineered a path to power that seemed improbable at first—but unfolded almost exactly as planned. The Makerfield byelection was the linchpin, delivering a victory that silenced critics and propelled Burnham into No. 10.
The Burnham vs. Starmer Contrast
Burnham's approach stands in stark contrast to his predecessor. Keir Starmer relied on a large majority and disdain for party management, while Burnham thrives on the messy business of political organisation. Where Starmer spoke politics as a second language, Burnham is natively fluent in Labour's labyrinthine factions.

Key Tactics in Burnham's Playbook
Burnham's success hinged on several deliberate moves. First, a friendly MP surrendered a safe seat to trigger a byelection. Second, Burnham's team cultivated momentum and persuaded other leadership contenders to stand aside. Finally, his native political fluency allowed him to navigate internal Labour dynamics effortlessly.
- Byelection strategy: Choosing the right candidate and running a strong local campaign.
- Momentum building: Using victory to clear obstacles and consolidate support.
- Personal branding: Making the “Andy” brand more powerful than the party logo.
- Internal networking: Liking politics and engaging with factions, unlike Starmer.
Why the Long Game Works
In an age of short attention spans, Burnham's methodical approach stands out. He understands that political power requires constant explanation and party management—chores Starmer neglected. By owning his success, Burnham earned the trust of Labour MPs who found Starmer's detachment unnerving.
The contrast is clear: Starmer believed his majority gave him space to govern without explaining himself. Burnham knows that trust is built step by step, election by election.
