In the best dishwasher detergent 2025 test conducted by consumer advocacy group Choice, dishwasher tablets have emerged as the clear winners over traditional powders. The comprehensive test of 34 detergents found that the top three products were all tablets, while powders struggled to impress.
Tablets Dominate the Top Rankings
Finish Powerball Ultimate 0% Tabs took out first place with a score of 77%. Tied for second place with 76% were Finish Powerball Ultimate Plus Tabs and Earth Choice All-in-1 Dish Tablets. The strong performance of tablets across the board signals a shift in consumer preference and formulation technology.

Chris Barnes, a senior project officer at Choice, noted, “The old dishwasher powder is just not impressing any more.” This sentiment reflects the growing sophistication of tablet formulations, which often combine multiple functions like rinse aid and salt action.
Price vs Performance: The Costly Trade-off
While tablets performed best, they come at a higher cost. The second-placing Finish Powerball Ultimate Plus was the most expensive detergent tested, costing $1.26 per wash. In contrast, Earth Choice All-in-1 Dish Tablets, which tied for second, cost significantly less at $0.42 per wash, offering a more budget-friendly option without compromising on quality.
On the other end of the spectrum, the cheapest product in the test was also the worst-performing. Housebrite Brite Dishwasher Powder costs just $0.08 per wash but scored only 40%. The second-lowest performer was Earth Choice Dishwasher Powder Lemon Fresh, scoring 47% at $0.21 per wash.
The One Advantage of Powders: Price
Barnes acknowledged that the “one big advantage” of powders is their price. For budget-conscious consumers, powders may still be tempting, but the performance gap is significant. The test results suggest that spending a little more on tablets can lead to much cleaner dishes.
Earth Choice, the brand behind both a top-performing tablet and a lower-performing powder, is taking steps to improve its powder offerings. A spokesperson said the company currently uses local external manufacturers for its powders, as its factory only produces liquid products. Within the next 12 months, it will begin manufacturing the powder itself and reformulate the product.
