Prime Minister Andy Burnham's visit to Kyiv marks a renewal of badly needed support for Ukraine, as he witnessed the human cost of war and pledged continued UK assistance. His first international trip as PM underscored Britain's steadfast commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
Burnham's Historic Visit to Kyiv
On Monday, Burnham traveled to Kyiv to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. It was a poignant occasion, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy honoring families of fallen soldiers. The setting, St Sophia Cathedral, symbolizes Ukraine's ancient statehood, predating Moscow by centuries.

Burnham, a foreign policy neophyte, has expressed strong support for Ukraine since taking office in July. But this visit gave him a firsthand view of the war's brutal realities. He saw modern weaponry, including quadcopter drones and unmanned land robots, on display near the cathedral.
Comparing Past and Present Struggles
In his speech, Burnham drew parallels between Ukraine's fight and Britain's during World War II. He declared, "My nation kept the flame of European freedom alive in the 20th century, you hold that flame in the 21st." This rhetoric resonated with Western leaders present.
The visit also highlighted the ongoing military aid from the UK and France, including Storm Shadow and Scalp cruise missiles. These long-range weapons have been crucial in targeting Russian naval ships and command centers.
