On a recent Friday, a Memphis pizza shop became the center of a heated national debate after owner Miles Tamboli announced he would refuse service to national guard troops deployed by the Trump administration. The decision, made in protest of the troop presence following the killing of two city residents, quickly went viral. Instead of hurting business, it triggered a buy-cott—a deliberate campaign to support the shop—resulting in record crowds and long wait times.
The Incident That Sparked a Movement
Miles Tamboli, owner of Tamboli’s Pasta & Pizza in midtown Memphis, posted a video announcing his refusal to serve the national guard. The troops were part of a Trump administration initiative aimed at reducing crime, but Tamboli cited the deaths of four residents since its start in September. Local activist Hunter Demster amplified the message, calling for a “buy-cott” of businesses that stood with the community. Soon, right-wing accounts like Libs of TikTok and Fox News Radio host Todd Starnes called for a boycott, expecting to drive the shop out of business.

The Result: A Packed House
Within days, Tamboli’s opened to a full house, with lines forming by 5:30 PM—something staff had never seen that early. Extra crew was brought in to handle the surge. Business is up “a great amount,” Tamboli said, and the packed Friday night crowd confirmed it. Patrons like Sarah Jones, dining with her family, explained that supporting the shop was a form of resistance. “I stand by businesses refusing service as a form of protest,” she said, noting that police overreaction has made traditional protests difficult.

Why This Matters for Business Owners
The Tamboli’s story shows that taking a strong political stand can backfire—or boomerang. While a boycott aims to punish, a buy-cott rewards. This case highlights the power of local community support over national outrage. Carol Bigam, a retired Memphian, summed up the sentiment: “Is he not allowed free speech? He was very professional. Give me a break, man.”

- Local loyalty often outweighs national political pressure.
- Clear communication—like Tamboli’s professional video—helps maintain customer respect.
- Small businesses can leverage media attention if they align with their customer base.
- Risk management requires understanding the potential for backlash or support.
FAQ
What is a 'buy-cott'?
A buy-cott is the opposite of a boycott: consumers deliberately purchase from a business to show support for its stance, often in reaction to a threatened boycott.
Why did the Memphis pizza shop owner refuse to serve national guard?
Miles Tamboli opposed the deployment after troops killed two city residents, making the total four since the initiative started. He saw refusal as a form of peaceful protest.
Did the boycott hurt the business?
No—the intended boycott backfired. Instead, a buy-cott from supportive customers led to record crowds and increased sales.
In the end, Tamboli’s Pasta & Pizza proved that local communities can rally around businesses that take principled stands. The story continues to unfold, but for now, the pizza shop is busier than ever.
