The cockroach protests have forced a shutdown of the Indian parliament as opposition parties demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. This youth-led movement, known as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), began as a satirical online joke but has escalated into a major political challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
What Sparked the Cockroach Protests?
The protests erupted after police used teargas and baton charges against demonstrators on Monday, leaving dozens injured. The CJP has been camped in central Delhi for days, vowing to stay until the education minister resigns and the government addresses exam scandals and police violence. Food deliveries from across India and abroad have kept morale high, with supporters sending biryani, pizza, and dal.

Opposition Leaders Join the Movement
Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi, was briefly detained on Tuesday after staging a sit-in outside Modi's residence. On Wednesday, opposition politicians dressed in black and waved placards outside parliament, leading to the suspension of proceedings. Gandhi accused the prime minister of “destroying the future of India’s youth.”
Key Demands of the Cockroach Janata Party
The CJP's demands center on accountability for exam irregularities and an end to police brutality against young protesters. They have also called for systemic reforms in education and employment. The movement has resonated with India's large youth population, who feel overlooked by the current government.
Comparing the Cockroach Protests to Previous Movements
Unlike past student-led protests, the CJP has harnessed social media and satire to build momentum. The following table compares the CJP movement to the 2020 farmers' protests and the 2019 anti-CAA demonstrations:
| Aspect | Cockroach Janata Party (2025) | Farmers' Protest (2020) | Anti-CAA Protests (2019) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Issue | Education reform & police violence | Agricultural laws | Citizenship Amendment Act |
| Leadership | Decentralized youth leaders | Farmers' unions | Student groups & political parties |
| Government Response | Police crackdown, opposition support | Negotiations, eventual repeal | Detentions, polarizing rhetoric |
| Current Status | Ongoing with parliamentary support | Largely concluded | Subsided post-COVID |
