The Democrats' datacenter push in swing states like Michigan is creating a risky political backlash that could undermine their midterm election hopes. Sarah Brabbs, a lifelong Democratic voter, expressed outrage after Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer appeared with OpenAI's Sam Altman to celebrate a $16 billion datacenter project in Saline township, a rural area west of Ann Arbor.
Why Datacenters Are Dividing Democratic Voters
Datacenters, which power AI and cloud computing, are energy-intensive and often opposed by local communities. A recent Ipsos national poll found that Democratic voters oppose datacenters by a margin of 17% compared to Republicans. Only 9% of Democrats support a datacenter in their own community, versus 21% of Republicans.
