Gambling reform in Australia is under scrutiny as former bettor Jesse Murphy reveals how VIP managers lured him with freebies and bonus bets. Despite Labor's proposed changes, Murphy warns that the industry's predatory tactics will continue to trap vulnerable individuals. His story highlights the urgent need for stronger regulations and enforcement.
How VIP Gambling Managers Operate
VIP managers are assigned to high-spending bettors, offering perks like free tickets, alcohol, and bonus bets to keep them engaged. Murphy, who received $43,700 in bonus bets over two years, describes these incentives as a “shiny, dangling carrot” that made it hard to quit. The managers often acted without prompting, depositing bonuses and matching deposits to encourage further gambling.

The Lure of Free Tickets and Alcohol
Murphy's experience included invitations to corporate boxes at AFL games and horse races, with all-inclusive food and drinks. His VIP handler even advised him on what to wear, creating a sense of obligation. “I felt like I needed to continually keep in touch with him so I wouldn’t lose access to the benefits,” he said. This psychological manipulation is a common tactic in the industry.
| VIP Tactic | Example | Reform Measure | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free event tickets | Corporate box at footy | Ban on inducements | Loopholes for “hospitality” |
| Bonus bets | $43,700 in 2 years | Limits on bonuses | Not enforced |
| Personal attention | Texts from handler | No direct contact | Self-exclusion weak |
Why Labor's Reform May Not Be Enough
Labor's proposed reforms include banning gambling ads and limiting inducements, but Murphy argues they don't address the core issue: the VIP manager relationship. “They’ll find another way to suck people in,” he says. The reform lacks teeth without strict penalties and independent oversight.
Moreover, responsible gambling tools are often ineffective. When Murphy expressed a desire to quit, his manager sent a link to a self-help tool but immediately followed up with more bonus bets. This contradictory behavior shows the industry's priority is profit, not player welfare.
Key Takeaways
- VIP managers use personalized perks to create dependency.
- Bonus bets are often given without request, encouraging reckless betting.
- Labor's reform may not close loopholes for hospitality and direct contact.
- Responsible gambling tools are undermined by simultaneous inducements.
- Stronger enforcement and independent monitoring are essential.
