Google workers are demanding layoff protections amid the AI boom, delivering a petition to CEO Sundar Pichai with over 4,500 signatures. The petition, led by the Alphabet Workers Union, calls for guaranteed severance, buyouts before mandatory layoffs, and an end to performance ratings based on quotas. Parul Koul, Google software engineer and union president, stated outside the company's California headquarters, "These layoffs and cuts are not difficult decisions, but simply profit being put over the people that make this company run."
Key Demands in the Petition
The petition highlights growing tensions as Google pours billions into AI while cutting its workforce. Workers are asking for guaranteed severance packages, the option to take severance as extended paid leave, and buyouts before any mandatory layoffs across all product areas. They also seek to eliminate performance ratings that they argue are based on achieving quotas rather than merit.

Why This Matters for Tech Employees
This petition is the largest piece of employee feedback Google has received about job security, according to Koul. It comes as big tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Meta thin their ranks, with some explicitly citing AI as a reason for layoffs. Google Cloud recently laid off employees, and last summer the company eliminated over one-third of managers overseeing small teams.
Comparison of Tech Layoffs and AI Spending
| Company | Layoffs (2023-2024) | AI Investment |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Alphabet) | 12,000+ | $100B+ over 5 years |
| Microsoft | 10,000 | $10B+ in OpenAI |
| Meta | 21,000 | $30B+ in AI infrastructure |
Employee Reaction and Union Action
Upon delivering the petition, workers were "greeted with closed doors and no response," Koul said. They left the petition with a staff member who committed to delivering it to Pichai. At a press conference, workers chanted, "Google, Google you can't hide, we can see your greedy side," and called out Alphabet's mass layoffs in 2023 with shouts of "shame."
