Indonesia is turning to dry ice to fight the toxic haze caused by widespread forest fires. As fires ravage the country, emitting smoke that has angered neighboring nations, the government is testing an unusual approach: dropping dry ice to induce rain and clear the air.
Indonesia's Dry Ice Experiment to Tackle Haze
After trying cloud seeding, water bombing, and deploying army personnel, Indonesia's coordinating security minister announced that dry ice would be dropped on South Sumatra on Thursday. "This trial of dry ice dispersal is being conducted under the president's direct instruction to help tackle the haze in South Sumatra," minister Dudung Abdurachman said, according to state news agency Antara. "We will first observe the results, and if effective, there is a possibility that this method could be implemented in other regions."

How Dry Ice Cloud Seeding Works
Dry ice, or solid carbon dioxide, is used in cloud seeding to stimulate precipitation. When dropped into clouds, it cools the moisture, causing ice crystals to form and eventually fall as rain. This method is considered more environmentally friendly than silver iodide, another common cloud seeding agent.
Context of the Crisis
Since January, almost 900,000 hectares have burned across Indonesia in the worst fire season in over a decade. The fires have been exacerbated by this year's "Godzilla" El Niño and the persistent practice of slash-and-burn to clear land for crops like palm oil. For months, millions of Indonesians have endured thick smoke and an apocalyptic tangerine haze, leading to mounting criticism of the government's response, including a class action lawsuit filed last week accusing it of "gross negligence." Tens of thousands have sought treatment for respiratory illnesses linked to the haze.
Regional Impact
Air quality has also plummeted in neighboring countries, forcing school closures and flight cancellations. The haze has become a recurring diplomatic issue in Southeast Asia, with Malaysia and Singapore often bearing the brunt of Indonesia's fires.
Comparison of Firefighting Methods
| Method | Description | Effectiveness |
|---|---|---|
| Water Bombing | Helicopters drop water on fires | Immediate but localized |
| Cloud Seeding (Silver Iodide) | Chemicals released into clouds to induce rain | Variable, environmental concerns |
| Dry Ice Cloud Seeding | Solid CO2 dropped into clouds | Promising, eco-friendly |
| Ground Firefighting | Army personnel and firefighters on ground | Labor-intensive, limited reach |
Key Takeaways
- Indonesia is testing dry ice dispersal to combat toxic haze from forest fires.
- The fires have burned nearly 900,000 hectares since January, the worst in over a decade.
- Dry ice cloud seeding is an environmentally friendly alternative to silver iodide.
- Neighboring countries are also affected by the transboundary haze.
FAQ
What is dry ice cloud seeding?
Dry ice cloud seeding involves dropping solid carbon dioxide into clouds to cool moisture and induce rainfall. It is a form of weather modification used to combat haze and drought.
Why is Indonesia using dry ice to fight fires?
Indonesia is using dry ice as a novel method to induce rain and clear the toxic haze from forest fires. It is being tested after other methods like water bombing and cloud seeding had limited success.
Is dry ice cloud seeding effective?
The effectiveness of dry ice cloud seeding can vary depending on weather conditions. It is considered promising and more environmentally friendly than silver iodide, but results are still being observed in Indonesia's trial.
