Iranian flights to and from Yemen are an unacceptable violation of the country’s sovereignty, according to a senior Yemeni official. Abdullah al-Alimi, vice-president in Yemen’s Saudi-backed, UN-recognised government, stated that these flights carry equipment for the Houthi movement, which he claims has escalated from a domestic threat into a regional and international danger. The statement comes after Yemeni government forces, supported by Saudi Arabia, bombed the Houthi-controlled Sana’a airport in protest of an Iranian plane carrying a Houthi delegation returning from the funeral of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
Escalation of Tensions in Yemen
The Iranian flights controversy has reignited tensions in the region. The plane eventually landed in Hodeidah, a Houthi-controlled Red Sea port. In response, the Houthis fired missiles at Saudi Arabia, breaking a four-year truce in the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned group. An emergency UN Security Council session called for de-escalation from both sides.

Houthi Response and Justification
The head of the Houthi national delegation defended the actions, stating, “Defending oneself, the homeland and the people is a religious, national, moral and humanitarian duty, and a legitimate right affirmed by Islamic law and international law.” This rhetoric underscores the deep ideological divide in the conflict.
Impact on Regional Security
Al-Alimi emphasized that the Houthis are in a weaker position than in recent years, partly due to the weakening of Iran, their longstanding supporter. He stated, “It is realistic that we can end their coup and restore the state and its institutions, contribute to the security and stability of the region and the world.” The conflict, which began in 2015 when the Houthis seized Sana’a, has caused a humanitarian crisis and drawn in regional powers.
