The Epstein files controversy took a new turn as JD Vance admitted on the Joe Rogan podcast that the Trump administration "absolutely screwed up the comms" regarding the release of documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The vice president's candid remarks highlight a significant political liability for Donald Trump's second term, with bipartisan criticism over delayed and heavily redacted disclosures.
What JD Vance Said About the Epstein Files
In a lengthy interview released on Wednesday, Vance told Rogan that the administration should have released all documents from the beginning. He referenced comments from former Attorney General Pam Bondi, who claimed Epstein's alleged "client list" was "sitting on my desk right now." Vance defended Bondi, saying she was "trying to respond to the political moment" but "overstated what we had." The vice president acknowledged that Bondi's statements fueled public mistrust, as she offered conservative influencers binders titled "The Epstein files: Phase 1" and "Declassified," which largely contained already-public documents.

Comparison of Epstein Files Release Phases
| Phase | Content Released | Public Reaction |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 (Bondi's Binders) | Already-public documents | Negative, seen as performative |
| December 2024 Release | Heavily redacted files | Mixed, concerns over redactions |
| Full Unredacted Files | Not yet released | Ongoing demand from lawmakers |
Why Transparency Matters
Vance insisted that the communication failure was not due to an intent to hide evidence. "Do I think the reason we screwed up the comms is because we were trying to hide something? No," he told Rogan. However, the Department of Justice's repeated delays and redactions have eroded trust. The Epstein case remains a flashpoint for debates on government accountability and the handling of sensitive investigations.
