Mexico's Top University Orders 58,000 to Resit Entrance Exam 2026

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam) has ordered 58,000 students to resit their entrance exam after a suspected cheating scandal, marking one of the largest academic integrity crises in recent history. The university's decision to re-administer the test in person comes after abnormally high scores in the remote online version raised red flags. This event highlights the growing challenges of maintaining fairness in high-stakes admissions, especially when relying on AI-based proctoring systems.

Why Unam Annulled Thousands of Entrance Exam Results

Unam, Mexico's most prestigious university, conducted its entrance exam online for the first time this summer, using an AI-powered webcam with voice and facial recognition to monitor candidates. However, the results revealed that the system failed to prevent widespread cheating. Between 2021 and 2025, only 3.5% of applicants scored 100 or more out of 120, but this year the figure jumped to 16%. The proportion of students achieving 110 or more increased sixfold from 0.9% to 5.5%.

This dramatic spike in high scores, particularly in the competitive medicine program—where 30% scored 100 or more compared to 9% last year—led to a national scandal. The university's rector, Leonardo Lomelí, acknowledged the issue, stating, "The Unam, the home of science, humanities and understanding, knows how to recognize mistakes and self-correct." He apologized to candidates who had legitimately passed but emphasized the need to "ensure certainty and guarantee equity in access."

AI Proctoring: A False Sense of Security?

The use of AI-powered proctoring was intended to deter cheating, but the results suggest it was ineffective. AI proctoring systems rely on behavioral cues like eye movement and voice patterns, but they can be bypassed with sophisticated techniques or simply fail to detect collusion. This incident raises questions about the reliability of remote proctoring in high-stakes exams.

Unam's response—ordering a resit exam in person—is a significant step to restore trust. However, it has sparked protests from hundreds of applicants in Mexico City, who blocked major thoroughfares in the south of the capital. The university's decision has also drawn attention from President Claudia Sheinbaum, who suggested that the attorney general may need to investigate if a crime was committed.

Comparison of Exam Scores: 2021-2025 vs. 2025

Key Takeaways for Universities and Test Administrators

• AI proctoring is not foolproof and can be vulnerable to cheating, especially in remote settings.
• In-person resits are a reliable fallback but can cause logistical and emotional stress for students.
• Transparent communication with candidates is crucial to maintaining trust during scandals.
• Statistical anomalies should trigger immediate review, as seen with Unam's score distribution.
• Legal implications may arise if cheating involves criminal activity, as hinted by the president's comments.

Impact on Students and Academic Integrity

For the 58,000 students required to resit the exam, this is a stressful and unfair situation, especially for those who followed the rules. The university's apology acknowledges this, but the damage to the exam's credibility is significant. This case serves as a cautionary tale for educational institutions worldwide that are increasingly adopting remote proctoring.

While Unam's corrective action is commendable, it also exposes the limitations of technology in ensuring academic honesty. As universities continue to navigate the digital age, they must balance convenience with integrity, and be prepared to act decisively when red flags appear.
