Mexico's Top University Orders 58,000 to Resit Entrance Exam 2026

Mexico's top university, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), has ordered 58,000 students to resit their entrance exam after suspected cheating. The decision follows abnormally high test scores that raised red flags about the integrity of the remote online exam. This unprecedented move highlights the challenges of maintaining academic standards in the digital age.

What Happened at UNAM's Entrance Exam?

Nearly 160,000 students took UNAM's entrance exam earlier this summer. The test was administered remotely for the first time, using an AI-powered webcam to monitor candidates with voice and facial recognition. Despite these measures, the results showed a dramatic and suspicious increase in high scores, prompting the university to take corrective action.

Key Statistics Behind the Scandal

The data reveals a clear anomaly. Between 2021 and 2025, only 3.5% of applicants scored 100 or more out of 120. This year, that figure jumped to 16%. Similarly, the proportion of students scoring 110 or more increased sixfold, from 0.9% to 5.5%. For the competitive medicine program, almost 30% of candidates scored 100 or more, compared to just 9% last year.

These numbers suggest that the AI proctoring system failed to detect widespread cheating. The university's rector, Leonardo Lomelí, acknowledged the mistake, stating, "The UNAM, the home of science, humanities and understanding, knows how to recognize mistakes and self-correct."

Why the Resit Exam Is Necessary

The resit exam will be held in person to ensure fairness and equity. Lomelí apologized to candidates who were fairly accepted but emphasized the need to "ensure certainty and guarantee equity in access." The university's response has been met with mixed reactions, including protests from hundreds of applicants who blocked major thoroughfares in Mexico City.

Impact on Students and Academic Integrity

This incident raises important questions about the reliability of AI proctoring and the future of online exams. It also underscores the importance of maintaining academic integrity in competitive admissions processes. For students, the resit exam is a stressful but necessary step to ensure that only qualified candidates gain admission.

• AI proctoring is not foolproof and can be bypassed by determined cheaters.
• In-person exams remain the gold standard for high-stakes testing.
• Universities must invest in robust anti-cheating measures.
• Transparency and communication are key to managing student expectations.
• Legal implications may arise if criminal activity is suspected.

What This Means for the Future

UNAM's decision to resit the exam is a bold step to protect its reputation as Mexico's most prestigious university. It also serves as a warning to other institutions that rely on remote proctoring. As technology evolves, so must the methods to ensure academic honesty.

For now, the 58,000 students affected will need to prepare for a second chance. The university has promised to provide support, but the pressure is on to prove their abilities under stricter supervision.

FAQ

This scandal serves as a critical reminder that academic integrity must be upheld, even in the digital era. UNAM's proactive response sets a precedent for other institutions facing similar challenges.
