MLS New Commissioner Priorities: Broadcast, Roster Rules & More 2026

As Larry Berg prepares to take over as MLS commissioner, the league's future hinges on five critical priorities, from broadcast partnerships to roster regulations. These decisions will shape the next era of American soccer, and fans, investors, and players alike are watching closely.

1. Charting a New Broadcast Future

The current Apple TV deal, worth $250 million annually, expires after the 2028-29 season. Berg must decide whether to renew, renegotiate, or pivot to traditional networks. With viewership averaging just 120,000 per game, the league needs broader exposure to grow its fanbase.

Key considerations include expanding free-to-air options, improving production quality, and leveraging social media highlights. A hybrid approach—mixing streaming with linear TV—could maximize reach and revenue.

2. Roster Rules and Competitive Balance

MLS's restrictive salary cap and designated player rules often limit team-building flexibility. Berg will face pressure from owners and players to modernize these structures. Loosening roster constraints could attract more international stars and increase on-field quality.

However, maintaining competitive balance is crucial to avoid a few super-teams dominating. A revised allocation money system or a luxury tax might strike the right balance.

3. Expanding Youth Development

Investing in academies and the USL partnership is vital for long-term talent production. The league's new U-22 initiative and increased homegrown slots are steps forward, but Berg must prioritize scouting and coaching at the grassroots level.

Successful youth pathways not only reduce transfer fees but also build local fan loyalty. Expect more emphasis on developing American stars rather than relying solely on foreign imports.

4. Enhancing Fan Experience and Stadium Atmosphere

With attendance plateauing, Berg must innovate to keep matches exciting. This includes improving stadium amenities, creating better in-game entertainment, and leveraging technology like VAR enhancements and digital fan engagement.

Safe standing sections, affordable concessions, and community events can differentiate MLS from other sports. The commissioner's office will likely push for more soccer-specific stadiums and urban locations.

5. Navigating International Competition

The 2026 World Cup, hosted partly in the US, offers a massive opportunity. Berg must capitalize on this momentum to boost MLS's global profile. This means strengthening Leagues Cup ties with Liga MX and participating in more international club tournaments.

However, the league must also guard against player burnout and fixture congestion. Strategic scheduling and roster depth will be key to balancing domestic and international commitments.
