MLS New Commissioner Priorities: Broadcast, Roster Rules & More 2026

The MLS new commissioner faces a daunting to-do list, and the top priorities include reshaping broadcast strategy, refining roster rules, and growing the league's global footprint. As Larry Berg prepares to take the helm, the soccer world watches closely to see how he will navigate these critical challenges. This article breaks down the five key areas that will define his tenure and the league's future.

1. Charting a New Broadcast Future

The current partnership with Apple, which began in 2023, has been a bold experiment. While it brought a significant financial boost, concerns about viewership and content depth persist. Berg will need to decide whether to renew, renegotiate, or pivot to a more traditional model.

According to recent reports, the league's average viewership stands at around 120,000 unique viewers per game, a figure that lags behind other major sports. The new commissioner must find ways to increase accessibility and engagement without sacrificing revenue.

Key Broadcast Considerations

• Evaluate the Apple deal's performance and explore alternative distribution channels.
• Enhance production quality and pregame/postgame content to attract more viewers.
• Consider free-to-air partnerships to build a broader fan base.

2. Roster Rules and Competitive Balance

MLS's complex roster regulations have long been a point of contention. The new commissioner will need to simplify rules to attract top international talent while maintaining competitive parity. The Designated Player rule and salary cap are likely to be revisited.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, the league must position itself as a desirable destination for global stars. Loosening restrictions could be a game-changer.

Potential Roster Reforms

• Increase the number of Designated Player slots per team.
• Adjust the salary budget to allow for more mid-level signings.
• Streamline the allocation process to make trades more straightforward.

3. Expanding Youth Development and Academies

Investing in homegrown talent is crucial for long-term success. The new commissioner should prioritize funding for academies and create clearer pathways from youth teams to the first team. This not only reduces transfer fees but also strengthens the national team pool.

Several MLS clubs have already made strides, but a unified approach could elevate the entire league.

4. Enhancing Fan Experience and Stadium Atmosphere

Matchday experience directly impacts fan loyalty and revenue. The commissioner must work with clubs to modernize stadiums, improve concessions, and leverage technology for a more interactive experience. Safe standing sections and supporter culture should be protected and enhanced.

Data shows that teams with higher fan satisfaction see increased attendance and merchandise sales, making this a financial priority as well.

5. Navigating the Post-2026 World Cup Boom

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held across the US, Canada, and Mexico, providing an unprecedented platform for MLS. The new commissioner must capitalize on this momentum to convert casual viewers into dedicated fans. This includes strategic marketing campaigns and international tours.

Berg has already hinted at ambitious goals, but execution will be key. The league must be ready to seize the moment.
