North Korea Sending 50,000 Troops to Russia: Ukraine War Update 2026

The Ukraine war briefing reveals that North Korea is sending 50,000 troops to Russia, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. This deployment, up from an earlier estimate of 30,000, underscores the deepening military alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow. Zelenskyy also called on South Korea to provide air defence support, highlighting Ukraine's critical shortage of high-end interceptors.

North Korea's Growing Military Role in Russia

North Korea has already supplied Russia with millions of artillery rounds, ballistic missiles, and multiple-launch rocket systems, according to Ukrainian and independent assessments. The new troop deployment—estimated at 50,000—will bolster Russian forces, particularly in contested regions like Kursk, where North Korean soldiers previously fought. Ukrainian military intelligence reports that a North Korean missile unit is now deploying to western Russia, equipped with up to 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers.

This partnership allows North Korea to gain modern warfare experience and receive military technology from Russia, as Zelenskyy noted. The presence of North Korean troops not only extends the conflict but also raises geopolitical stakes, drawing in regional powers like South Korea and potentially altering the balance of power in Europe and Asia.

Impact on Ukraine's Air Defence Shortage

Ukraine faces a severe shortage of air defence systems, particularly against ballistic missiles that are difficult to intercept without advanced systems like the US Patriot. Zelenskyy has explicitly requested support from South Korea, stating, "We are ready to work on the drone deal and other areas as well." Ukrainian diplomats are in contact with Seoul to finalize potential deals. In a related development, Ukraine is poised to purchase 70 ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles from Turkey, pending US approval, according to congressional documents.

Quality Concerns and Casualties

North Korean-supplied artillery rounds have been reported as dangerously low quality by Russian milbloggers and troops, sometimes causing malfunctions. Thousands of North Korean soldiers have been wounded or killed in previous deployments, yet Pyongyang continues to send more troops, indicating a strategic commitment to supporting Russia despite human costs.
