The NSW Liberals' Reformers group allegedly used illegal donations to pay for personal expenditure, including a bucks night, as revealed in the Icac corruption inquiry. This scandal underscores the need for transparency in political funding and the consequences of branch stacking.
Icac Inquiry Reveals Misuse of Donations
The Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) heard testimony from Robert Assaf, a key figure in the Reformers, a conservative faction within the NSW Liberals. Assaf admitted to temporarily using funds from the group's account to cover a bucks night, raising serious ethical and legal questions.

The inquiry focuses on allegations that the Reformers solicited illegal donations to recruit party members, a practice known as branch stacking. The group aimed to push conservative policies on issues like same-sex marriage, abortion, and euthanasia.
Funneling Funds Through Beckington
Assaf explained that payments from prohibited donor Michael O'Hara were routed through Beckington, a lobbying firm, to maximize tax benefits. However, counsel assisting Peggy Dwyer SC challenged this explanation, suggesting it was an afterthought. Assaf admitted the arrangement was 'tricky' and acknowledged that creating fake invoices to minimize tax is illegal.
The WhatsApp messages cited in the inquiry reveal a casual attitude toward the misuse of funds, with one message stating, 'Rob has the bucks cash coming back.' This highlights a culture of impunity among the group's members.
