The NWSL has unveiled its 2027 season schedule, featuring the earliest start in league history and a seven-week summer break for the Women's World Cup. This strategic move aims to elevate the league's profile and integrate it into the broader American sports landscape.
NWSL 2027 Season Overview
The regular season will kick off on February 11 with a match hosted by Angel City in Los Angeles, just three days before Super Bowl LXI in the same city. The annual Challenge Cup, featuring the reigning champion against the Shield winner, is set for February 6 at a location to be determined. Each team will play a 30-game schedule.

The season will pause entirely during the Women's World Cup, which runs from June 24 to July 25 in Brazil. This break ensures players can represent their national teams without club conflicts. The regular season concludes with Decision Day on October 31, followed by playoffs in the first two weekends of November and the championship on November 20.
Strategic Alignment with Major Sports Events
The decision to open the season in Los Angeles during Super Bowl week was intentional, according to Commissioner Jessica Berman. The Super Bowl will be broadcast on ESPN, an NWSL media partner, and the league will collaborate closely with ESPN to integrate NWSL content into the weekend's coverage. This move is part of the league's ongoing effort to increase visibility and attract new fans.
Previously, during the 2023 Women's World Cup, the NWSL paused regular-season play for five weeks but continued the Challenge Cup as an in-season tournament. Since then, the league has expanded from 12 to 16 teams, increasing the regular-season match calendar from 132 to 240 games.
Comparison: 2023 vs. 2027 World Cup Breaks
| Season | Start Date | World Cup Break | Total Teams | Regular-Season Games |

| 2023 | March | 5 weeks (Challenge Cup continued) | 12 | 132 |
| 2027 | February 11 | 7 weeks (full pause) | 16 | 240 |
