NWSL 2027 Schedule: Early Start, World Cup Break Announced 2026

The NWSL has announced its 2027 season schedule, featuring the earliest start in league history and a seven-week summer break for the Women's World Cup. This strategic move aims to elevate the league's profile while navigating the global football calendar.

NWSL 2027 Season Overview

The regular season will kick off on February 11, 2027, with a match hosted by Angel City in Los Angeles, just three days before Super Bowl LXI takes place in the same city. The annual Challenge Cup, between the reigning champion and Shield winner, is set for February 6 at a location to be determined. Each team will play a 30-game schedule, a significant increase from previous years.

Why the Early Start and Summer Break?

The break aligns with the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, running from June 24 to July 25. By pausing league play, the NWSL ensures its stars can represent their countries without club conflicts, similar to the 2023 World Cup pause but extended from five to seven weeks. This also allows the league to avoid competing with the tournament's global attention.

Strategic Integration with American Sports

Commissioner Jessica Berman emphasized the intentional choice to open in Los Angeles during Super Bowl week. The Super Bowl will be broadcast on ESPN, an NWSL media partner, enabling cross-promotion. The league has been actively integrating into the broader sports landscape, hosting games at baseball stadiums and featuring in ESPN doubleheaders with the WNBA.

Expansion and Growth

Since the 2023 World Cup, the NWSL has grown from 12 to 16 teams, and the regular-season match calendar has expanded from 132 to 240 games. This growth reflects the league's rising popularity and financial stability, making the 2027 schedule a milestone in its evolution.
