The Pentagon-DOJ joint taskforce targeting press leaks, announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration's crackdown on unauthorized disclosures. This initiative aims to identify and prosecute individuals leaking sensitive information to the media.
What Is the New Joint Taskforce on Leaks?
Hegseth revealed the taskforce in a video posted on X, stating that the Pentagon and Department of Justice will collaborate to investigate and prosecute leaks. He delegated tasking authority to the war department's Office of General Counsel (OGC), empowering it to request records across the department for media leak investigations.

Key Goals of the Taskforce
The primary objective is to protect national security by deterring leaks. Hegseth emphasized that leaked information risks lives and that those who betray the trust of classified information will face the full force of the law. The taskforce also aims to streamline investigations between the Pentagon and DOJ.
| Aspect | Previous Approach | New Taskforce Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Coordination | Separate agency investigations | Joint taskforce with shared resources |
| Authority | Limited to individual departments | OGC empowered to request cross-department records |
| Speed | Slower due to bureaucratic hurdles | Expedited processes for leak investigations |
Recent Context: Subpoenas to Journalists
The announcement follows reports that the Trump administration issued subpoenas to New York Times journalists. These subpoenas relate to stories about security concerns with Trump's new Qatari-gifted plane, based on anonymous sources. The Times reported that Trump used the older Air Force One due to security precautions.
Implications for Press Freedom
Critics argue that this taskforce could chill press freedom by targeting journalists and their sources. Supporters say it is necessary to protect classified information. The balance between national security and the public's right to know remains a contentious issue.
- Increased scrutiny on media leaks and anonymous sourcing
- Potential legal battles over reporter subpoenas and source protection
- Heightened security measures within government agencies
