Petrol theft is reaching crisis levels across UK forecourts, with garage owners like Shailesh Parekh losing over £40,000 annually to fuel runners. The problem has escalated since the war in Iran began, with a 23% rise in incidents. Parekh, who owns six garages in Birmingham, describes thieves becoming audaciously casual—even a suited businessman drove off in a Jaguar without paying.
The Growing Fuel Theft Epidemic
Once a rare occurrence, petrol theft now happens weekly or daily at many stations. Parekh recalls a time when a drive-off would be talked about for months. Today, it's routine. In June alone, 12 people drove off from one of his forecourts. The financial impact is severe: across six garages, thefts cost him more than £40,000 last year.

Who Are the Thieves?
Fuel runners are no longer just organized criminals. Parekh describes a “farmer” who filled up with £140 of petrol and disappeared. Others wear hi-vis jackets to impersonate workmen. The common thread: no fear. They park right in front of the pump, as if daring staff to stop them.

|---|---|
| 9,089 incidents reported | 11,180 incidents (23% increase) |
| Rare event, often by organized gangs | Daily occurrence, by any driver |

How Garage Owners Are Fighting Back
Parekh relies on CCTV cameras and alerts staff to suspicious behavior. Pre-pay systems at unmanned stations are another solution, but many customers resist. Some owners install barriers or require customers to leave a credit card. Despite these measures, thieves adapt quickly.
- Install high-definition CCTV covering every angle of the forecourt.
- Use pre-pay or pay-at-pump systems to eliminate drive-offs.
- Train staff to spot red flags like face masks or nervous drivers.
- Share license plates with local police and other stations.
- Increase lighting and remove hiding spots near exits.
FAQ
Why is petrol theft increasing?
The rise is linked to the Iran war and higher fuel prices. Desperation and opportunity combine, making drive-offs more common. Thieves also see it as a low-risk crime with high reward.
How can forecourt owners prevent fuel theft?
Owners should invest in pre-pay systems, high-quality CCTV, and staff training. Collaboration with local police and other garages also helps track repeat offenders.
Is fuel theft a crime with serious consequences?
Yes, it's theft under UK law. Offenders can face fines, community service, or even imprisonment if caught, though enforcement is challenging due to limited police resources.
The battle against petrol theft is far from over. As Parekh notes, thieves have no fear and adapt quickly. Garage owners must stay one step ahead with technology and community vigilance. For consumers, supporting stations with pre-pay systems can help reduce losses and keep prices stable.
