Rainwater harvesting is revolutionizing life in informal settlements across Mexico City, allowing families to grow avocados, lemons, and prickly pears at home. This sustainable approach addresses severe water scarcity in communities where conventional water networks do not reach.
How Rainwater Harvesting Systems Work
The systems capture rainfall from metal or tile roofs, channel it through filters, and store it in tanks. A typical installation from Isla Urbana includes a 2,500-liter storage tank for household use and a smaller 1,100-liter tank for gardening. This provides sufficient water for five to eight months of the year, covering the rainy season and part of the dry period.

Key Components
First-flush diverters discard the initial dirty runoff, while sediment filters ensure clean water. The stored water is used for drinking, cooking, and irrigation after proper treatment. Users report dramatic improvements in quality of life, especially for women who previously spent hours hauling water from distant wells.
Comparison: Rainwater Harvesting vs. Traditional Water Delivery
| Feature | Rainwater Harvesting | Traditional Water Truck Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per year (average household) | $100–$150 (system maintenance) | $300–$600 (truck fees) |
| Water reliability | Seasonal (rainy months) | Weekly scheduled deliveries |
| Empowerment | Self-sufficient, no waiting | Dependent on external providers |
| Gardening potential | Year-round with stored rain | Limited due to cost and supply |
| Environmental impact | Low – uses local rainfall | High – diesel trucks, transport |
Benefits of Rainwater Harvesting for Low-Income Communities
- Food security: Families can grow vegetables and fruits, improving nutrition and reducing grocery costs.
- Time savings: Hours previously spent collecting water can be used for education, work, or family.
- Health improvements: Clean stored water reduces waterborne diseases common in untreated sources.
- Climate resilience: Communities become less vulnerable to drought and water price hikes.
- Economic savings: Lower water bills and potential income from selling surplus produce.
Isla Urbana’s Mission and Impact
Founded in 2009 by Enrique Lomnitz, Isla Urbana has installed thousands of rainwater harvesting systems across Mexico, primarily in Indigenous and informal settlements. The organization aims to reach one million people by 2025. Co-founder Lomnitz emphasizes that water scarcity is not just a technical problem but a socio-economic one. “Much of our work involves delivering water to areas that are hard to reach with conventional systems,” he explains.
Success stories like Ana Aparicio Bahena’s garden in Cristo Rey demonstrate the transformative power of local water autonomy. Her once-barren yard now flourishes with onions, prickly pears, cactus leaves, blackberries, and avocados. “I never used to be able to grow my own food. It’s wonderful,” she says.
FAQ
What is rainwater harvesting?
Rainwater harvesting is the collection and storage of rain from rooftops or other surfaces for later use. It typically involves gutters, filters, and storage tanks, and provides an independent water supply for households or gardens.
Is rainwater harvesting safe for drinking?
Yes, when properly filtered and treated. Isla Urbana systems include first-flush diverters and sediment filters. Boiling or adding chlorine further ensures safety. Many users drink the water without issues after basic treatment.
How much does a rainwater harvesting system cost?
Costs vary by size and complexity. A basic household system in Mexico can range from $200 to $600 USD, with subsidies available for low-income families through organizations like Isla Urbana and government programs.
Can I install rainwater harvesting in an apartment or small space?
Yes, compact systems are available for balconies or small roofs. Even a 100-liter tank can water plants or flush toilets. For full household use, a minimum of 500 liters of storage is recommended.
Rainwater harvesting is more than a technical fix—it is a pathway to self-reliance, food security, and dignity for communities long neglected by traditional water infrastructure. As Mexico City faces increasing water stress, such decentralized solutions offer a scalable, sustainable future.
