Political Reactions and Criticisms
Andy Burnham is “too in hock to vested interests” to offer real change, according to Zack Polanski of the Green Party. The Greens launched a pushback against the incoming prime minister, portraying him as cautious and weak on wealth taxes, Gaza, and rent controls.
Meanwhile, Labour's foreign aid cuts mean reductions of as much as 90% in bilateral support to some African countries, Foreign Office figures show. British Steel has formally been taken into public ownership, preventing the closure of its Scunthorpe steelworks and saving 4,000 jobs.
Economic and Local Government Updates
The UK economy returned to growth in May, despite the impact of the Iran war on energy costs, official figures confirm. In local government, Jonathan Carr-West of the LGIU thinktank noted that the government has “in general opted for more, smaller councils rather than fewer, larger ones” in its reorganisation plans.
The County Councils Network criticized the decisions, with chair elect Sean Matthews stating: “Today’s decisions show how far ministers have departed from the statutory criteria and programme’s original aims.”
