Artillery barrels forged in Sheffield, Britain, are being delivered to Ukraine’s military under a £61m deal announced last year. Sheffield Forgemasters has shipped the first four barrels out of a planned 150, marking the first time in nearly two decades that forged artillery barrels have been produced in the UK. This development underscores the critical role of industrial manufacturing in supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.
Sheffield Steel: A Historic Return to Artillery Production
The barrels are being produced by Forgemasters and the nearby BAE Systems artillery factory, which opened in Sheffield last year. Under the contract, the two companies will manufacture 105mm and 155mm barrels for Ukrainian artillery. Artillery barrels eventually wear out on the battlefield and need regular replacement, making this supply chain vital for Ukraine’s sustained defense efforts.

Sheffield is currently producing eight barrels per month, and the first four shipped are expected to help Ukraine test its own manufacturing facilities. This production ramp-up comes as the UK and its European allies seek to increase their domestic weapons manufacturing capabilities. Forgemasters was nationalised in 2021, with the Ministry of Defence stating the purchase was necessary to secure critical British defence programmes.
Comparison: UK vs. Other Artillery Barrel Producers

| USA | 155mm | ~20 barrels | Multi-billion |
| Germany | 155mm | ~12 barrels | €100 million+ |

Political Context: Zelenskyy’s Government Shake-Up
Amid the artillery deliveries, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that Sergiy Koretsky, CEO of state energy firm Naftogaz, is best prepared to become Ukraine’s next prime minister in a government reshuffle. This follows the sacking of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, which sparked uproar among allies and Ukrainian civil society.
Fedorov’s six months in office coincided with a dramatic improvement in Ukraine’s battlefield position, and his removal has been linked to rumors of a feud with Ukraine’s top military commander, Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi. Zelenskyy characterized his choice of Koretsky as related to Ukraine’s energy needs, as the country’s electricity grid and gas supplies face continued attacks.
