Details of the Thailand School Shooting

The attack began at the suspect's home, where he used his grandfather's handgun to kill two grandparents. He then traveled to Debsirin School, where he was a pupil, and opened fire. Police confirmed five teachers were shot before the suspect turned the gun on himself.

Authorities reported at least 30 injuries, with nine people severely wounded. The 12-year-old girl suffered a bullet wound to the head and remains in critical condition. Two other patients underwent surgery and are stable.

Response and Aftermath

Thailand's prime minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated the suspect was under stress and appeared to have planned the assault. He vowed to propose a new law restricting public firearm carrying, as Thailand has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership globally.

The Higher Education minister donated blood at a nearby hospital and urged public participation. Debsirin School suspended all classes from 10 to 14 August, with staff working from home. Police collected evidence from the suspect's residence, including computer equipment.

Gun Ownership and Mass Shootings in Thailand

Thailand has witnessed several mass shootings in recent years, highlighting a persistent issue. The country's gun ownership rate is estimated at 15.5 per 100 residents, according to the Small Arms Survey. This incident underscores the need for stricter control.

The comparison shows that while Thailand has lower gun ownership than the US, mass shootings still occur, indicating that even moderate rates can lead to tragedies. Experts argue that mental health support and school security are equally critical.
