Thailand School Shooting: Teen Suspect Kills 7, Injures 30 2026

The Thailand school shooting on October 3, 2023, shocked the nation as a 14-year-old suspect killed seven people and injured more than 30, including a 12-year-old girl in a coma. This tragic event highlights urgent concerns about school safety and gun control in Thailand.

Thailand School Shooting: What Happened

The suspect, a student at Debsirin School in Bangkok, first killed his grandparents at home using his grandfather's handgun, then traveled to the school and opened fire. Police confirmed five teachers were shot before the suspect turned the gun on himself.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated the suspect was "under stress" and had planned the assault. The attack lasted several hours, with students describing terrifying scenes of chaos and fear.

Casualties and Injuries

At least 30 people were injured, with nine severely wounded. Three patients remain in critical condition at Phra Nang Klao Hospital. Two underwent surgery and are stable, but the 12-year-old girl with a bullet wound to the head remains in a coma.

Health Minister Phatthana Phromphat visited the hospital and urged public blood donations. The Higher Education minister also donated blood to support the victims.

Response and School Suspension

The Debsirin secondary school suspended all classes from October 10 to August 14, with staff working from home. Authorities collected evidence from the suspect's house, including computer equipment, to understand the motive.

Police and emergency services responded swiftly, but the incident has raised questions about prevention and mental health support for teens.

Gun Control in Thailand: A Call for Change

Thailand has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership in the world. Prime Minister Charnvirakul vowed to propose a new law to restrict public firearm carrying, a significant step after several mass shootings in recent years.

This incident underscores the need for stricter regulations and better mental health resources to prevent future tragedies.

Comparison of Gun Ownership and Mass Shootings

Thailand's high gun ownership rate correlates with frequent mass shootings, unlike Japan's strict laws. This data supports the prime minister's call for reform.
