Tory Neo-Nazi Appointment Sparks Abuse Victim Outrage 2026

The Conservative Party's appointment of a former neo-Nazi to a national advisory role has sparked outrage, with Labour peer Luciana Berger urging Kemi Badenoch to "listen to victims" and reverse the decision. Joshua Bonehill-Paine, who was jailed for antisemitic abuse, has been given a role on the party's culture and integration commission.

Background of the Controversial Appointment

Joshua Bonehill-Paine was sentenced to over three years in prison in 2015 for posting antisemitic material online before a planned neo-Nazi rally. In 2016, he was found guilty of racially aggravated harassment for abuse directed at Luciana Berger, who was then a Member of Parliament. He also founded and led the National British Resistance, a far-right group.

Berger, who is Jewish, said she is still affected by his crimes more than nine years later. She questioned what safeguarding checks Badenoch and the Conservative Party carried out before his appointment to the culture and integration commission. She also asked whether Bonehill-Paine's new role could bring him to Westminster, writing on X: "Can I expect to come face to face with him on the parliamentary estate?"

Badenoch's Defense and Public Reaction

Badenoch's spokesperson confirmed that Bonehill-Paine would not have a parliamentary pass and would not be on the estate. However, the Conservative leader published a lengthy defense of Bonehill-Paine in The Times, describing questions over his suitability to stand as a councillor in Somerset as a "pile-on." Bonehill-Paine had been set to stand as a Tory local councillor but withdrew from next year's local elections after being offered the advisory role.

Badenoch stated: "People need to understand that the Conservative party under my leadership is now the party of personal responsibility and law and order. That means insisting on consequences by punishing wrongdoing and protecting the public, especially victims. We need fewer double standards and instead higher standards in a system that is repeatedly failing to protect the public. We should be tough enough to stand by our beliefs even when politically inconvenient, wise enough to recognise rehabilitation and consistent enough to apply the same standards to everyone."
