President Trump escalated his attack on the Smithsonian Institution by ordering the Department of the Interior to place temporary signs in front of the National Museum of American History. The signs are intended to notify visitors that the museum's exhibits may be inaccurate and should be renovated according to a forthcoming report.
Background of the Controversy
The Trump administration has long accused the Smithsonian of focusing too heavily on injustices in American history rather than celebrating triumphs like the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This order directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to work with the National Park Service and domestic policy adviser Vince Haley to design signs for the walkways leading into the museum.

What the Signs Will Say
While the White House has not released specific language, the executive order states that the signs "shall notify visitors that the museum exhibits should be renovated consistent with the findings in the report." They also must direct the public to alternative sources for accurate American history information, particularly regarding the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

| American Historical Association | Political interference undermines scholarly integrity and public trust; museum exhibits are based on evidence. |
| Smithsonian (via Director Anthea Hartig) | Declined to comment, but previously defended institutional commitment to accuracy. |
