Uganda Food Crisis: Emergency Aid After 19 Die from Hunger

Uganda's food crisis has escalated to a critical level as the government launches emergency food handouts following at least 19 deaths from hunger in the drought-stricken Karamoja region. The prolonged dry spell has devastated crops, leaving 1.5 million people facing acute food shortages and rising malnutrition.

Scope of the Crisis in Karamoja

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (Fews Net) reports that the situation has deteriorated to a crisis across Karamoja. The region is experiencing its most severe dry spell in years, with no meaningful rainfall since April 2024—the beginning of the planting season. Farmers have lost entire harvests, and families are struggling to find food.

Angelina Nakiru, a 21-year-old mother of two in Rupa, described her daily struggle: she works at a small-scale grinding mill crushing rock to wash out gold-bearing ore, earning barely enough for a cup of maize and beans. “The work is dusty and exhausting, but it is the only way I can earn money to feed the children,” she said.

Government Response and Relief Distribution

Uganda's parliament approved a 45-billion-shilling (£9 million) emergency funding allocation, which authorities used to procure 9,400 tonnes of relief food. The distribution began at a primary school in Lodiko sub-county, Kaabong district, overseen by Sam Engola, Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees. “The president does not want to hear of anyone in Karamoja dying of hunger,” Engola stated, vowing to ensure everyone receives food.

This large-scale operation is the first of its kind organized by the Ugandan government after the funding void left by aid cuts. The relief will be distributed over the next two months, targeting the most vulnerable households.

Deaths from Hunger At least 19 reported
Emergency Funding 45 billion shillings (£9 million)
Food Relief Quantity 9,400 tonnes over 2 months

Key Challenges and Ongoing Threats

Despite the government's efforts, challenges remain. The drought has dried up water sources, and malnutrition rates are climbing. Many families, like Nakiru's, rely on precarious daily labor. Without sustained aid and long-term solutions, the crisis could deepen.

  • Acute food insecurity affects 1.5 million people in Karamoja.
  • Crop failure due to drought since April 2024.
  • Funding gaps after international aid cuts.
  • Malnutrition rising, especially among children.
  • Need for long-term resilience programs beyond emergency relief.

FAQ

What caused the hunger crisis in Karamoja, Uganda?

The crisis is primarily due to a prolonged drought that has led to crop failure. The region received no meaningful rainfall since April 2024, destroying harvests and depleting food supplies.
