The UK government expects Meta to implement the same child safety measures in Britain as those agreed in the US following an $18bn settlement, signaling a potential shift in social media regulation. Pat McFadden, work and pensions secretary, emphasized that American teens should not enjoy higher protection than their UK counterparts.
Meta's US Settlement: Key Child Safety Measures
Meta's settlement with dozens of US states includes a default daily time limit of two hours for users under 18, which can only be lifted by a parent. Additionally, the company will block under-18s from using the platform between midnight and 6am, and will restrict user notifications during nighttime and school hours.

These measures aim to address concerns about the impact of social media on adolescent mental health. The settlement also includes bans on under-18s displaying likes or reactions and on cosmetic procedure image filters, features not currently proposed in UK regulations.
Comparison of US and UK Child Safety Measures
| Measure | US Settlement | UK Current Proposals |
|---|---|---|
| Daily time limit (2 hours) | Yes | No |
| Night-time block (midnight-6am) | Yes | No |
| Notification restrictions | Yes | No |
| Ban on likes/reactions display | Yes | No |
| Ban on cosmetic filters | Yes | No |
| Social media ban for under-16s | No | Yes (proposed) |
The UK government is considering a ban on social media for under-16s, but the US settlement introduces more granular protections that could be adopted. McFadden stressed the need for consistency, stating he does not want US teens to have a higher rate of protection than British teens.
Implications for UK Social Media Regulation
Analysts note that many US measures fall within changes Meta has already made elsewhere, but the UK has not yet proposed similar restrictions. The settlement could pressure UK regulators to adopt these protections, especially as Meta has urged TikTok and YouTube to follow the same standards.
If the UK adopts these measures, it would represent a significant step in social media regulation, potentially influencing global standards. Parents and policymakers are closely watching how these protections evolve.
