The Ukraine war briefing reveals that Ukraine's former top military commander, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, has stated that Kyiv has no chance of joining NATO, citing the country's armed forces' development level and the alliance's outdated doctrines. This stark assessment comes as Ukraine continues to face Russian aggression on multiple fronts.
Zaluzhnyi's NATO Membership Reality Check
Valerii Zaluzhnyi, now Ukraine's ambassador to the UK, told a meeting of Ukrainian ambassadors that Ukraine does not meet the military standards required for NATO membership. He noted that for 12 years he worked on aligning Ukraine with NATO standards, but each year heard promises that membership was imminent. "Unfortunately, we will never actually join," he said, emphasizing that Ukraine's military development is incompatible with an organization guided by World War 2 doctrines.

This admission challenges Ukraine's constitutional goal of NATO and EU membership, acknowledging that not all NATO members currently support Ukraine's accession. Zaluzhnyi's dismissal as top commander in 2024 over disagreements with President Zelenskyy on war strategy adds context to his blunt assessment.
Recent Drone Attacks and Frontline Stalemate
In the latest Ukraine war briefing, Russian officials reported that Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow region, killing five people and injuring six. Fires broke out in the Novoselki industrial zone, with firefighters extinguishing a large warehouse blaze. Near St. Petersburg, another warehouse was hit by drones, prompting Finland to establish a temporary aviation restriction area in the eastern Gulf of Finland.
According to an Agence France-Presse analysis of data from the Institute for the Study of War, Ukraine's frontlines were little changed in July, as Ukrainian forces largely stalled Russia's momentum. This suggests a grinding stalemate despite ongoing attacks and counterattacks.
