Two US troops were killed and one is missing in Jordan after Iranian attacks, escalating tensions in the Middle East. The US retaliated against Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) following the deadly assault, which occurred as Tehran launched a wave of attacks against US allies in the region. This latest incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, with the US military conducting multiple strikes on Iranian-backed forces.
US Retaliation Against Iranian Forces
The US military confirmed on Saturday that it "targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces that launched attacks against US service members in Jordan on July 17." US Central Command also reported hitting "Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defence facilities, maritime capabilities and missile and drone storage sites." These strikes represent the seventh consecutive night of US operations against Iran since the temporary ceasefire agreement was declared over by former President Donald Trump.

Iran's Supreme Leader Issues Warning
A statement attributed to Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has remained unseen since the war began, warned of "unforgettable lessons" if the US continues attacks. The signature of Khamenei was described as "worthless and invalid" by US officials, signaling a complete breakdown in diplomatic relations. The Iranian attacks on US allies came in response to US strikes on civilian infrastructure, including bridges and power facilities.
Impact on Regional Allies
Kuwait on Saturday accused Iran of targeting civilian sites and vital infrastructure, including a power and water desalination plant. The country, which is extremely arid, relies on desalinated water for about 90% of its drinking water. Kuwait was forced to close its airspace briefly as it intercepted Iranian missiles and drones, and several Kuwaiti firefighters and a worker were injured while battling blazes sparked by Iranian strikes.
Bahrain also activated its air sirens on Saturday, warning residents to shelter after detecting possible incoming drones or missiles. Jordan's state-run Petra news agency reported that the kingdom's air defence systems had downed Iranian missiles. The secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council condemned Iran's actions, highlighting the widespread regional impact.
