Utah Wildfire Helicopter Crash: Two Onboard, Rescue Ongoing 2026

A firefighting helicopter crash in Utah has left two people onboard in a remote area near Richfield, prompting an urgent rescue operation amid the Widemouth 2 wildfire. The Sikorsky S64 helicopter went down on Friday morning, and officials have confirmed that emergency personnel are working to reach the scene, though difficult terrain and a new fire sparked by the crash have complicated efforts.

Details of the Utah Helicopter Crash

The crash occurred approximately 160 miles south of Salt Lake City, in central Utah's rugged landscape. The US Forest Service initially declined to comment on the condition of the two individuals onboard, asking for public patience while focusing on response efforts. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation, with NTSB investigators expected to arrive by Saturday evening.

Deputy incident commander Tyler Hecht described the terrain as “very difficult” and noted that rescuers had not yet reached the accident site because the crash ignited a new fire. He also shared that the morale among firefighters is “very somber,” but they have taken a tactical pause and are back to battling the blaze.

Widemouth 2 Fire: Context and Scale

The helicopter was fighting the Widemouth 2 fire, a lightning-sparked wildfire that has burned over 105,000 acres since July 27. As of Friday morning, the fire was only 19% contained, with 632 personnel assigned and seven helicopters dropping retardant and water. This fire is one of eight large fires burning across Utah, which together have swept through more than 331,000 acres.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox called wildland firefighting “among the most dangerous jobs in the world,” highlighting the extraordinary risks faced by these brave men and women.
