Brown hares are a spectacular sight against golden wheat stubble, and a recent visit to a wildlife-friendly farm revealed just how resilient these creatures can be. The farmer's message about an unbelievable breeding season set the stage for an afternoon of discovery.
Why Farmland Matters for Brown Hares
Modern agriculture often leaves little room for wildlife, but this farm proves otherwise. With ponds, wet scrapes, woodlands, and massive hedges, the landscape offers perfect hare habitat. Wide margins and scruffy wildflower mixes support pollinators and provide cover for hares and other mammals.

Grasshoppers, crickets, hoverflies, and bees buzz through the margins. Field voles tunnel beneath, while badgers, deer, and hares leave trails and scats. This biodiversity is no accident—it's the result of thoughtful land management.
The Encounter: Hares Sitting Tall
As I crawled through a hedge into a field of bright gold wheat stubble, a roe doe broke cover. Then I saw them: a dozen brown hares, dark against the golden backdrop. They sat tall, braced against the earth, alerted by the deer. Through binoculars, I studied their ripped physiques and furious, all-seeing eyes—like an Egyptian hieroglyph, sovereign and unknowable.
Hares have inspired many folk names, yet none seem to stick. Perhaps because they resist being tamed or categorized. These are among the most persecuted wild mammals, with illegal coursing booming under organized crime influence.
How to Spot Hares in Farmland
- Look for fields with standing wheat or stubble, especially near hedges and margins.
- Visit during early morning or late afternoon when hares are most active.
- Watch for their tall, upright posture—distinct from rabbits.
- Listen for their distinctive 'ticking' call during mating season (March to October).
- Respect their space; never approach or chase them.
