Antonelli Shocks Verstappen to Claim F1 Belgian GP Pole 2026

Kimi Antonelli produced a stunning lap to outpace Max Verstappen and grab pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The 19-year-old Italian’s composure and control were on full display as he flew around the Ardennes circuit, beating the Red Bull driver by a commanding 0.317 seconds. This margin is the largest advantage any driver has held for pole this season, signaling Antonelli’s resurgence after a run of bad luck.

Antonelli’s Dominant Performance at Spa

Antonelli had suffered a battery failure in Spain and a wheel-shield failure at Silverstone, reducing his 64-point championship lead over teammate George Russell to just 25 points. However, at the Belgian GP, he showed no signs of being fazed. His lap was a masterclass in precision and speed, leaving Verstappen—who benefited from a tow from teammate Isack Hadjar—in second place. Verstappen admitted the tow was crucial, but even that wasn’t enough to match Antonelli’s pace.

Key Factors Behind Antonelli’s Pole

• Battery recovery after recent reliability issues
• Confidence in the car setup at Spa
• Flawless execution under pressure

Comparison: Antonelli vs. Verstappen Qualifying Lap

Russell could manage only fourth place, a full half a second behind his teammate. The Briton has struggled with straight-line speed since the Austrian GP, leaving him confused and frustrated. “It feels like you’re battling with one hand behind your back,” Russell said. “It’s a challenge.”

What This Means for the Championship

Antonelli’s pole position sets up a crucial race day. If he can convert this into a win, he will extend his title lead over Russell. Verstappen, starting second, remains a threat, but the Mercedes driver’s form at Spa suggests he could dominate the race. The Belgian GP is known for unpredictable weather, but Antonelli’s confidence remains high. “I’ve been feeling good with the car all year,” he said. “It’s good to be more and more confident whenever I jump in it.”

Key Takeaways

• Antonelli’s pole is his first since Monaco
• Verstappen struggling with straight-line pace
• Russell faces a steep climb to recover
• Mercedes shows strong form at Spa
