Peru Plane Crash Near Nazca Lines Kills 13 Tourists 2026

A tourist plane crash near Peru's Nazca Lines has killed 13 people, including foreign tourists, highlighting ongoing safety concerns for aerial sightseeing. The Cessna Grand Caravan went down in Pueblo Viejo, about 6 kilometers from Nazca, shortly after departing from Pisco. The accident occurred on a routine overflight of the ancient geoglyphs, a UNESCO World Heritage site that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.

Details of the Fatal Flight

The aircraft carried 11 passengers and two pilots, all of whom perished. Among the victims were seven Italians, two Germans, two Spaniards, and the Peruvian pilot and copilot, Americo Salazar Cuellar and Irenka Del Carpio. The plane lost contact with air traffic control at 1:20 PM local time, just 20 minutes after takeoff. Emergency responders arrived to find the wreckage smoldering in the desert, with no survivors.

Investigation Underway

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Police Major Jorge Andrade confirmed that four bodies had been recovered at the time of his statement. The incident is a grim reminder of the risks associated with small aircraft operations in remote areas. Previous crashes at the Nazca Lines site have raised questions about aircraft maintenance and pilot training.

History of Accidents at Nazca Lines

This is not the first tragedy at the site. In 2022, a crash killed seven people, including two Chileans and three Dutch nationals. In 2010, two separate accidents claimed the lives of British, Chilean, and Peruvian passengers. A 2008 crash also resulted in five French tourists' deaths. These repeated incidents have led to calls for stricter safety regulations.

Safety Concerns for Overflights

Several operators compete to offer overflights of the Nazca Lines, but safety standards vary widely. Experts point to aging aircraft, inadequate maintenance, and pressure to fly in challenging conditions. Tourists are advised to verify the safety record of any operator before booking. The Peruvian government has promised to review procedures, but action has been slow.
