Richard Hammond Fined for Speeding in Porsche and Bentley 2026

Richard Hammond, the former Top Gear host, has been fined for speeding in a Porsche and a Bentley, highlighting the consequences of exceeding speed limits. The 56-year-old television presenter faced court proceedings after being caught breaking the speed limit twice within three weeks, raising awareness about speeding penalties in the UK.

Richard Hammond's Speeding Offenses

Hammond was first caught on 2 December last year while driving his Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. He was clocked at 68mph in a 50mph zone on the A40 in Pencraig, Herefordshire. Just 20 days later, on 22 December, he was caught again in his Bentley Continental GT, speeding at 82mph in a 70mph limit on the A50 Rudhall overbridge in Herefordshire.

West Mercia police brought two prosecutions against Hammond, using speed camera images as evidence. He pleaded guilty through his lawyers to both charges, and at Telford magistrates court, he received seven penalty points on his licence and was ordered to pay a total of £1,771, comprising two fines of £333 and £666, plus costs and victim surcharges.

Penalties and Court Proceedings

The magistrate, Ann Minton, imposed the fines and penalty points. Hammond's legal team handled the case, and he did not attend court in person. The fines were calculated based on his income, reflecting the seriousness of the offenses. In addition to the fines, Hammond now has seven points on his licence, which could affect his driving privileges and insurance premiums.

This is not Hammond's first brush with speeding penalties. In 2013, he and Jeremy Clarkson received a three-month driving ban in France after being caught speeding while filming an episode of Top Gear. Hammond also survived a near-fatal 320mph jet car crash in 2006, which highlights the risks associated with high-speed driving.

Comparison of Speeding Fines and Penalties

Speeding fines in the UK vary based on the severity of the offense and the driver's income. Below is a comparison of typical penalties for different speeding scenarios.

Hammond's fines were higher due to his income, as the UK system uses a percentage of weekly earnings for certain offenses. His case also involved two separate incidents, which likely influenced the cumulative penalty.

Key Takeaways from Richard Hammond's Case

• Speeding can lead to significant fines, penalty points, and even driving bans.
• Fines are often income-based, meaning higher earners may face larger penalties.
• Multiple speeding offenses within a short period can result in more severe consequences.
• Speed cameras and police officers are effective at detecting violations.
• Ignoring speeding tickets can lead to additional legal issues.

How to Avoid Speeding Fines

To avoid the stress and cost of speeding fines, drivers should always adhere to posted speed limits and adjust their speed for road conditions. Using cruise control on highways can help maintain a consistent speed, and staying aware of speed camera zones is crucial.

Additionally, modern vehicles like the Porsche and Bentley Hammond drives often have advanced speed warning systems that can alert drivers when they exceed the limit. However, these systems are not a substitute for responsible driving.
