Andoni Iraola, the new Liverpool head coach, reveals the secret behind the dominance of Spanish and Basque coaches: a powerful sense of collectiveness. Over coffee in Chicago, Iraola explained that Spain's success in team sports stems from prioritizing the group over individual stars, a philosophy he now brings to Anfield.
The Basque Coaching Phenomenon
Basque managers like Iraola, Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso, and Unai Emery now lead top Premier League clubs. This unprecedented rise is no coincidence. Iraola argues that a collective mindset, ingrained from childhood, allows them to build cohesive teams that outperform rivals with flashier talent.

How Iraola Embodies These Values
In 2014, as Athletic Club captain, he sent a letter declining a Liverpool move out of loyalty to his boyhood club. This act of selflessness defines his character. Now, as head coach, he aims to replicate that team-first culture at Anfield, restoring the joy and belief that once made Liverpool formidable.
The Champions League, Premier League, and World Cup are all held by Spanish or Basque coaches. Iraola's mission is to add more silverware to that list by empowering the collective rather than the individual.
