The Argentina national team sparked global controversy after celebrating their World Cup semi-final win over England by displaying a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” referencing the 1982 Falklands war. The match, held in Atlanta, saw Argentina rally from a 1-0 deficit in the final minutes to secure a 2-1 victory and a spot in the final against Spain.
What Happened During the Celebration?
After the final whistle, defenders Lisandro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso held up the banner while grinning and waving to fans. The banner’s origin remains unclear, but it immediately drew attention to the long-standing territorial dispute over the Falkland Islands, known as Islas Malvinas in Argentina.

Historical Context of the Falklands Dispute
The Falklands war lasted 74 days in 1982, resulting in over 900 deaths—649 Argentinians and 255 Britons. The islands remain a British Overseas Territory, but Argentina continues to claim sovereignty. This is not the first time political symbols have appeared at the World Cup; earlier, Iranian Americans waved pre-revolutionary flags during matches in Los Angeles.

Player Reactions and FIFA Rules
Martínez, who plays for Manchester United, said the banner stirred deep emotions. “I can picture a Malvinas veteran seeing that and weeping,” he stated. Teammate Leandro Paredes added, “Sadly, it is a sad part of our history… We knew we were playing for them, too.” FIFA’s code of conduct bans political, offensive, or discriminatory banners, raising the possibility of sanctions.
