Athens Suitcase Death: Suspect Admits Hiding Body, Denies Murder 2026

The Athens suitcase death of Scottish charity worker Elisabeth-Jane Ross has taken a new turn as the suspect, 26-year-old Sharif Ahmadzai, admits to hiding her body but denies murder. Greek authorities are now focusing on the victim's final hours to uncover the motive behind this shocking crime that has gripped international attention.

Suspect's Confession and Denial

During three days of questioning, Ahmadzai confessed to carrying Ross's body to an abandoned building and hiding it in a suitcase. He also admitted to withdrawing €10,000 from ATMs using her credit cards. However, he firmly denies any involvement in her death, claiming he discovered her lifeless body in an apartment he managed in the Exarchia district.

Police have CCTV footage of Ahmadzai transporting the body on the night of July 16, which contradicts his story. George Kalliakmanis, honorary president of the Athens police officers' association, stated, "He has admitted to carrying her body to the site... but he has denied murder which police do not believe."

Background of the Accused

Ahmadzai, a professional boxer, arrived in Greece as a child refugee from Afghanistan during the migration crisis a decade ago. He later married Alaina Hall, a US citizen, and together they ran a refugee solidarity group called Love Every Nation. The couple had keys to the apartment where Ross was staying, adding complexity to the case.

Investigators are exploring whether the crime was motivated by robbery, personal conflict, or something else entirely. Ross, a friend of Hall's, had moved into the apartment on July 10 after arriving in Athens from Edinburgh. Her tragic death has raised questions about safety for aid workers in the region.

Key Evidence and Timeline

The investigation continues as authorities await formal charges. Ahmadzai will appear before an investigating magistrate on Wednesday to face accusations of intentional homicide.

What This Means for Justice

For now, the Athens suitcase death remains a tragic reminder of how quickly life can change. The victim's family and friends are seeking answers, and the Greek justice system is under pressure to deliver a fair outcome.
