Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey brings Homer's ancient Greek epic to the big screen with significant changes, including the omission of gods and key characters. The film condenses a 12,000-line poem into a three-hour cinematic experience, altering emphasis on famous episodes and adding new elements. Here we explore the most notable alterations Nolan made.
Gods and Divine Intervention Removed
In Homer's original, gods like Zeus, Athena, and Poseidon actively shape Odysseus's journey. Nolan's film only features Athena (Zendaya) as a vision seen by Odysseus (Matt Damon), representing his conscience rather than a divine entity. This shift eliminates the epic's supernatural framework, grounding the story in psychological realism.

Nausicaa and the Phaeacians Omitted
One of the most beloved scenes in the Odyssey is Odysseus's meeting with Princess Nausicaa and the Phaeacians. Nolan completely removes this storyline, instead having Odysseus recount his adventures to Calypso (Charlize Theron) through recovered memories. This change streamlines the narrative but loses the cultural exchange and hospitality themes.
| Element | Homer's Odyssey | Nolan's Film |
|---|---|---|
| Gods | Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, Hermes active | Only Athena as a vision |
| Nausicaa & Phaeacians | Key meeting and storytelling scene | Omitted entirely |
| Underworld Ghosts | Achilles, Ajax, Odysseus's mother appear | Only Agamemnon shown |
Major Ghosts Cut from the Underworld
The film includes Odysseus meeting Agamemnon (Benny Safdie) in the realm of the dead, but omits Achilles, Ajax, and Odysseus's mother. In Homer, these encounters provide emotional depth and prophecy, but Nolan focuses on the most dramatic interaction to maintain pacing.

- Nausicaa and Phaeacians are removed to streamline the plot.

- Athena appears as a conscience rather than a literal goddess.
FAQ
Why did Christopher Nolan remove the gods from The Odyssey?
Nolan likely aimed for a more grounded, psychological interpretation, with Athena serving as Odysseus's conscience rather than a literal deity. This aligns with his realistic filmmaking style.
What characters were cut from the film?
Key omissions include Nausicaa, the Phaeacians, Achilles, Ajax, and Odysseus's mother from the underworld. Only Agamemnon appears among the ghosts.
Does Nolan's film include the Cyclops and Circe?
Yes, these episodes are included but are recounted by Odysseus to Calypso as recovered memories, rather than shown in the original chronological order.
Nolan's The Odyssey is a bold reimagining that prioritizes character psychology over mythological spectacle.
