Cristian Volpato, the Socceroos forward and 2026 World Cup breakout star, has allegedly tested positive for cocaine after being pulled over for driving nearly 50km/h over the speed limit in Sydney early Friday morning. The 22-year-old Italian-Australian footballer now faces scrutiny from police and Football Australia as investigations continue.
Details of the Incident
According to NSW police, Volpato was driving a BMW Coupe at 109km/h in a 60km/h zone across Anzac Bridge at approximately 1:10am on Friday. A roadside drug test allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine. A secondary oral fluid sample was taken for further analysis, and police confirmed inquiries are ongoing.

Remarkably, Volpato had been stopped just two hours earlier—at 11:05pm Thursday—on the same bridge for speeding more than 20km/h over the limit. That stop included a negative alcohol breath test, but no drug test was administered at that time.
Legal Consequences
Volpato was issued an infringement notice for the first speeding incident and has had his international driver’s licence suspended for six months, barring him from driving in New South Wales. He has not been charged with any criminal offence. The secondary drug test results will determine whether formal charges—such as driving under the influence of drugs—are pursued.
