Prisoners of Paradise Review: Ellie Bamber's Chaste Colonial Love 2026

Prisoners of Paradise review explores the new film starring Ellie Bamber, a chaste literary tale of star-crossed lovers set in colonial Mauritius. Based on a novel by Booker nominee Romesh Gunesekera, this drama attempts to tackle themes of race and class but ultimately falls flat.

Prisoners of Paradise: Plot and Setting

The story unfolds in 1925 on a sugar plantation in Mauritius, where 17-year-old Lucy (Ellie Bamber) arrives after her mother's death. She stays with her uncle George (Rupert Penry-Jones), a plantation owner with deeply racist views. Lucy soon meets Krishna (Mehdi Dehbi), a local man of Indian heritage working in the fields, and they begin a secret romance.

The film aims to critique colonial attitudes, but it does so with a heavy hand. Uncle George's garden still displays shackles from slavery, a symbol that feels more like a prop than a meaningful statement. The love story, meant to be passionate, is remarkably restrained—almost as if the filmmakers were afraid to show any real heat.

Performance and Character Development

Ellie Bamber brings a naive charm to Lucy, but her character is thinly written. Krishna is even less developed; we barely see his life in the fields or village, making it hard to connect with his struggles. Rupert Penry-Jones stands out as Uncle George, offering glimmers of self-loathing beneath his colonial arrogance, but even he can't save a script that keeps everyone at arm's length.

Comparing Prisoners of Paradise to Other Colonial Romances

To better understand where this film falls short, let's compare it to similar movies in the genre:

As the table shows, Prisoners of Paradise lacks the emotional depth and social subtlety of its predecessors. The romance feels as intoxicating as camomile tea, and the critique of racism is surface-level at best.

Key Takeaways from the Film

• The film is based on a novel by Romesh Gunesekera, a Booker nominee.
• Set in 1925 colonial Mauritius, it deals with racial and class divides.
• Ellie Bamber and Mehdi Dehbi give earnest but underwritten performances.
• The love story is deliberately chaste, reducing dramatic tension.
• Rupert Penry-Jones delivers the most compelling performance as Uncle George.

Why Prisoners of Paradise Misses the Mark

The film's biggest flaw is its failure to develop Krishna's perspective. We see almost nothing of his life, his community, or the harsh realities of plantation labor. Instead, the narrative focuses entirely on Lucy's awakening, which feels one-sided and patronizing.

Even the cinematography, which should showcase Mauritius's beauty, fails to inject energy into the scenes. The waterfall moment, meant to be a Mr Darcy-style revelation, is filmed so damply that it loses all erotic charge.

Final Verdict on Prisoners of Paradise

While the film has noble intentions, it never delivers the emotional payoff audiences expect from a forbidden love story. It's a missed opportunity to explore complex themes with nuance. For fans of Ellie Bamber, it's a watchable but forgettable entry in her filmography.
