Prophets Review: A Mysterious Tale of Faith at the End of the 2026

In this Prophets review, we delve into Jack MacGregor's latest play, a mysterious tale of faith at the end of the world, set on a fictional South Pacific island. The play, which premiered at the Edinburgh Festival, explores the clash between scientific inquiry and religious fervor, offering a thought-provoking narrative that resonates with contemporary issues.

Prophets Review: A Compelling Premise

The story follows Kerris, a Scottish researcher, who arrives on Saint John, a remote British Overseas Territory, to study plant life. However, she soon becomes entangled with the islanders' apocalyptic religious practices, led by a charismatic figure known as the prophet. The play's opening is strong, with Rebecca Wilkie delivering a nuanced performance as Kerris, and Xander Cowan's multitasking as Joe adding depth to the ensemble.

MacGregor's political instincts shine through, hinting at colonial undertones and administrative neglect. The slow-burning tension suggests a cover-up, but as the narrative unfolds, the focus shifts to Kerris's personal history, which remains frustratingly vague. This leaves the audience at a distance, preventing full immersion into the cult's dynamics.

Character Development and Thematic Depth

While the play touches on the dangers of cults, it stops short of exploring why individuals are drawn to such belief systems. Kerris's backstory, hinted at but never fully realized, could have provided a more intimate lens. Instead, we get a surface-level critique, which feels uncontroversial and somewhat predictable.

The production, directed by Fraser Scott, is well-acted, but the script's pacing falters in the second half. The real drama, it seems, lies beyond the island's shores, leaving the audience with more questions than answers.

Prophets Review: A Comparative Look

Key Takeaways from the Play

• Strong performances, especially from Rebecca Wilkie and Xander Cowan.
• Intriguing premise that tackles faith and colonialism.
• Lack of character depth undermines emotional impact.
• Fails to provide a comprehensive look at cult psychology.

Final Thoughts on Prophets

Despite its flaws, Prophets is a thought-provoking piece that showcases MacGregor's ambition. It's a must-see for theatre enthusiasts interested in political allegories, but those seeking a deep character study may be left wanting. The play runs at Assembly Roxy until 31 August.
