The Dink review highlights Jake Johnson’s engagingly silly pickleball comedy that serves up laughs and a fresh take on sports rivalries. This film, now streaming on Apple TV, follows Dusty (Johnson), a middle-aged tennis has-been who reluctantly discovers the joys of pickleball. With cameos from Andy Roddick and John McEnroe, the movie blends humor with heart.
Plot and Performances
In The Dink, Dusty, nicknamed “The Hammer,” is a tennis coach at his father’s club, played by Ed Harris with scowling contempt. After a wrist injury, his doctor (Ben Stiller) prescribes pickleball as therapy, leading to unexpected romance with Candace (Mary Steenburgen). The film flirts with age-gap dynamics but keeps the tone light. Supporting actors Aaron Chen and Patton Oswalt add comedic depth, though Chris Parnell’s role feels underwhelming.
