The Drover's Wife Opera Review: Leah Purcell's Powerful Emotional 2026

The Drover's Wife opera review reveals how Leah Purcell's powerful emotional retelling transforms Henry Lawson's classic into a postcolonial feminist western. This operatic version, composed by George Palmer, premiered at Queensland Performing Arts Centre and is now captivating audiences with its ritualistic blend of song, dance, and storytelling.

Leah Purcell's Vision: From Stage Play to Opera

Leah Purcell, a Goa Gunggari Wakka Wakka Murri woman, first adapted Lawson's short story into a critically acclaimed 2016 stage play. She then expanded it into a novel and film. Now, with composer George Palmer, she brings Molly Johnson's story to the operatic stage. The opera opens with a whispered incantation and singing in language, as Wiradjuri soprano Shauntai Abdul-Rahman invites the audience to listen, look, and learn.

This latest iteration signals a significant evolution. The opera format allows for a more holistic experience, combining dance and song with narrative to work on both the intellect and the body. It's a perfect form for truth telling, addressing ugly truths about colonial Australia's treatment of women and first peoples.

The Story: Molly Johnson's Night of Terror

In Purcell's retelling, Lawson's unnamed bushwoman becomes Molly Johnson, sung by Nina Korbe, Purcell's niece. Molly has a name, a country (the lands of the Ngambri Walgalu in Victoria's high country), a rich backstory, and a shotgun she knows how to handle. The opera follows several days with Molly and her eldest son Danny (Nick Smith) as they fend off menacing white male intruders, with unexpected help from Yadaka (Marcus Corowa), a Guugu Yimithirr man on the run.

Powerful Performances and Emotional Depth

Nina Korbe delivers a powerful performance as Molly, capturing both vulnerability and strength. Marcus Corowa's Yadaka provides a complex counterpoint, and the ensemble of dancers adds a ceremonial layer. The music, composed by George Palmer, underscores the emotional tension, from quiet moments of introspection to explosive confrontations.

Opera as a Medium for Truth Telling

Opera provides a distinctive opportunity for Purcell's project. Unlike spoken drama, opera can create a more immersive, ritualistic experience. The combination of music, dance, and text allows for a deeper emotional resonance. It's a form that works on the brain and the body, making it ideal for addressing historical trauma and colonial violence.
