The Strokes' Reality Awaits is a stunning fusion of mayhem and melody, marking their best album in years. The band's seventh studio album, their first in six years, sees Julian Casablancas blending the chaotic energy of his side project the Voidz with the timeless minimalism of the Strokes. This review unpacks how the album delivers a perfect marriage of pop hooks and experimental weirdness.
The Voidz Influence: A Blessing in Disguise
For years, die-hard Strokes fans resisted the Voidz, dismissing their proggy 2014 debut Tyranny as awkward. But those who stuck with Casablancas found a playful, experimental space that revitalized his songwriting. On Reality Awaits, that influence is front and center. Tracks like the opening Babble On combine Auto-Tuned warbling with classic Strokes guitar jangles, creating a sound that is both fresh and familiar.

Highlight Tracks and Melodic Genius
The album’s standout moment comes in Going to Babble On, where Casablancas sweetly sings about starting again over a deceptively simple chord progression. Elsewhere, he unleashes his funniest lyrics in years, name-dropping John Legend and Josh Groban amid distorted vocal takes. The title track Reality Awaits builds from a sparse verse to a soaring chorus, proving the band still knows how to craft anthems.
