The Summer Book Review: Glenn Close Shines in Gentle Drama 2026

The Summer Book review highlights Glenn Close's powerful performance in this gentle adaptation of Tove Jansson's classic novel. This film brings a sweet-natured story of grief and healing to the screen, with Close's totemic presence anchoring every scene.

Glenn Close's Grandmotherly Role

Close plays an eightysomething woman who is tough, wise, and humorously cantankerous. She smokes cigarettes and wanders outside naked when alone, bringing an unvarnished authenticity to the role. Her character, along with her recently widowed son and six-year-old granddaughter Sophia, retreats to a tiny island in the Gulf of Finland to process their loss.

The grandmother's interactions with Sophia are the heart of the film. She chats about life and death with unsentimental honesty, while her son retreats into his own sadness, which Close's character robustly calls self-pity. The film's emotional core lies in these quiet moments between grandmother and granddaughter.

A Story of Grief and Healing

The narrative follows the family as they navigate their grief over the death of Sophia's mother. The film doesn't reveal how she died, focusing instead on the healing process. The grandmother takes on the burden of being present for Sophia, offering wisdom and distraction, while the son struggles to cope.

Anders Danielsen Lie plays the son, but the film gives him little to work with, wasting his considerable talent. The story builds toward a cathartic moment, arriving with a storm that endangers their boat trip to a nearby lighthouse. This sequence provides the emotional release the characters desperately need.

Comparison with the Novel

Tove Jansson's 1972 novel is a beloved classic, and this adaptation stays true to its gentle tone. However, the film sometimes becomes becalmed in its own sensitivity, lacking the narrative drive of the source material. The movie's pacing may test some viewers, but Close's performance keeps it engaging.

Key Takeaways from The Summer Book

• Glenn Close delivers a career-highlight performance, blending toughness with tenderness.
• The film beautifully captures the healing power of nature and family bonds.
• It's a faithful adaptation, though it may feel too slow for some viewers.
• The storm sequence provides a powerful climax, earning the film's emotional payoff.

Is The Summer Book Worth Watching?

For fans of slow-burn dramas and literary adaptations, The Summer Book is a rewarding experience. Close's performance alone justifies the watch, bringing depth to a character that could easily become a stereotype. The film's gentle approach to grief and its beautiful island setting create a poignant atmosphere.

However, those seeking fast-paced entertainment may find it lacking. The movie's quiet introspection is its strength, but it also risks alienating viewers who prefer more action. Ultimately, The Summer Book is a sweet-natured film that succeeds through its performances and emotional honesty.
