The Summer Book Review: Glenn Close Shines in Grief Drama 2026

The Summer Book review highlights Glenn Close's remarkable performance in this gentle adaptation of Tove Jansson's 1972 novel. The film, directed with a delicate touch, explores grief, family, and the healing power of nature on a remote Finnish island.

Close plays an eightysomething grandmother who is tough, wise, and delightfully cantankerous. She brings her recently widowed son and six-year-old granddaughter Sophia to their summer cottage, where they hope to process their loss. The story unfolds with quiet moments of connection and subtle emotional depth.

Glenn Close's Grandmotherly Performance

Close's portrayal is the heart of the film. She embodies the grandmother with a mix of sharp humor and unsentimental tenderness. Her interactions with young Sophia (played by newcomer Emily Matthews) are the film's strongest asset, offering a realistic depiction of intergenerational bonding.

The actress's makeup-enhanced appearance adds authenticity, but it's her expressive eyes and measured delivery that truly sell the character. She avoids clichés, presenting a woman who is both fragile and formidable.

Supporting Cast and Character Dynamics

Anders Danielsen Lie plays the son, a man consumed by his own sadness. Unfortunately, the script gives him little to work with, leaving his character underwritten. The film hints at his internal struggle but never fully explores it, which feels like a missed opportunity given Lie's proven talent.

Veteran Icelandic actor Ingvar Sigurdsson makes a brief cameo as Eriksson, a local man with whom the grandmother may have unresolved feelings. This subplot adds a layer of complexity, though it remains underdeveloped.

Adaptation of Tove Jansson's Classic Novel

Tove Jansson's novel is a beloved classic, and this adaptation stays faithful to its contemplative tone. The film captures the essence of the book—its meditations on mortality, memory, and the natural world. However, the pacing may feel slow for some viewers, as the narrative meanders through idyllic summer days.

The cinematography beautifully showcases the Gulf of Finland's stark landscape, reinforcing the themes of isolation and renewal. The storm scene near the Söderskär lighthouse provides a much-needed climax, bringing the characters' buried emotions to the surface.

Comparison with Other Grief Dramas

While The Summer Book may not reach the emotional heights of these classics, it offers a quieter, more reflective take on loss. Its strength lies in its authenticity and the chemistry between Close and Matthews.

Key Takeaways

• Glenn Close delivers a career-highlight performance.
